Devils Hold Off Elimination

Scott Gomez scored two goals Saturday as the New Jersey Devils beat Carolina, 5-1, and avoided elimination in Game Four of their Eastern Conference semifinal.

Goaltender Martin Brodeur made 19 saves, Jay Pandolfo and John Madden each had a goal and an assist and Patrik Elias had two assists for the Devils, who trail the best-of-seven series three games to one.

Rookie Cam Ward had his first sub par outing of the post-season, allowing four goals on 17 shots before being pulled in favor of Martin Gerber. Gerber finished with 15 saves for Carolina, which will try again to close things out on Sunday in Raleigh.

Mark Recchi had the lone goal for the Hurricanes.

New Jersey dominated from the opening face-off, holding a 3-0 lead after the first period.
