As I was in the process of finishing my "Imusgate" post...CBS Radio made the following announcement:
CBS 2 has learned that CBS-owned radio station WFAN has fired Don Imus. The news comes a day after MSNBC discontinued their relationship his radio show.
CBS Chairman and CEO Les Moonves met with Reverends Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson on Thursday morning to discuss Imus' future with the company. The shock jock has been in hot water since calling members of the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos."
Once again I refer people to the Phil Mushnick article from the New York Post where he writes:
Meanwhile, this Imus thing is a story not so much years in the making, but years in the indulging and years in the ignoring.
Watching this all unfold has taught me that its not the act of being offensive that is wrong, but its WHO you offend.
Imus disparages Catholics, Jews, conservatives, and countless others...so on and so forth. He made a career of doing so. But people looked the other way.
But when its a matter of race, and it offends Al Sharpton, then its a real problem. If CBS and MSNBC really felt this strongly about Imus, they should have acted on ample opportunities presented to them a long time ago.
Otherwise, this is absolutely disgraceful all around. Hypocrisy is brewing in the air from every direction, and on one is innocent.
