Bernie Williams plans to decline the New York Yankees' offer to attend spring training on a minor league contract, the outfielder told reporters Friday night before playing guitar at a benefit concert.
"I think if they wanted me, they would have signed me already," Williams was quoted as saying by several New York newspapers. "The option to go to spring training and see what happened — I don't think at this moment it is something I want to consider."
Williams added that he's been working out, but it doesn't appear as though he'll be playing with the Yankees this year.

Okay this is getting pretty sad. I'm not a Yankee fan, and so I fully cannot appreciate the emotional attachment to this long time Yankee. But isn't it time for him to hang it up already?
The Yankees are not in need of a fifth outfielder on their bench who can hardly even play that position anymore. The most he would be needed for is to be DH, but he had an average year last year as a hitter. Is he really the answer to the last roster spot on the Yanks bench?
Bernie should either sign the minor league contract, try out at Spring Training, and if he makes it to the team then yahoo! Otherwise, call a press conference, have a tearful goodbye, and then go down as one of the all time greats in Yankee history. But to continue to drag this out is futile.
