One Man's Loss Is Another Man's Gain [David Stefanini]
As the number 1 overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, JaMarcus Russell, is holding out of Oakland camp, Daunte Culpepper is reaping the benefits.
JaMarcus Russell was drafted first by the Oakland Raiders in this years draft. If Russell reported to camp and signed a deal, he would of unquestionably been the starting quarterback this season. Now, with each passing day, the likelihood of Russell starting drastically declines. The Oakland Raiders have not been quiet in the way they feel Daunte is coming along. They have been saying he looks amazing in training camp, and looks to be exactly what they hoped for.
Now how much of that is true, and how much of that is just the Raiders trying to put pressure on Russell? I would have to say most of it is true. When I watch ESPN, a lot of the analysts are saying that Culpepper is moving very well with the ball, and he looks to be very accurate. If I were JaMarcus Russell I would want to sign that contract as fast as I can. If Culpepper continues to look this good, Russell will be riding the bench for this season.
Now Russell was the #1 pick and will eventually attain the keys to the franchise. Daunte is just putting those plans on hold. Even if Culpepper has an amazing year and looks like the Culpepper of old, he will not be a Raider next season. He will look for more money elsewhere and Russell will be given the keys to start next year. But Russell could of had them this year if he would of just reported to camp and signed his contract.
