Mets Need a Rocket [Update]
Matthew Cerone of Mets Blog linked my piece about Roger Clemens on his site, and it started a comment onslaught on the disgrace of a human being that Clemens may very well be.
But remember this Met fans... First think of the Yankee fan...they hated Clemens for years and then accept him as a member of the team in '99. And what happens? Clemens makes his daily pat on the head to the Babe and helps them win two more championships. All is forgiven.
Furthermore, the grudge held against Clemens for the Mike Piazza incident from the 2000 WS should not outweigh the desire to win a WS. If Clemens coming to the Mets can help assure that and the only thing the team is giving up is a barrel of money, then the Mets would be silly not to at least pursue the possibility.
Look, the Mets had an oppurtunity to get Barry Bonds back in '01. Everyone knew what a jerk he was, and that he was a team headache. But he did go on to hit t hundred two more homeruns, and almost won a WS with the Giants (and would have had their bullpen not collapsed). Met fans at the time rejected the idea of getting Bonds because he was a jerk.
Rejecting a player because he may not be a good person is not a definate reason to not sign them. After all, who wouldn't want to have a Ty Cobb on their team?
