Allen Iverson: Where Will he go? [David Stefanini]
First I'm sorry I haven't been able to post more often, it's finals week and being an engineering major requires hours upon hours in the library. With that out of the way:
Where will Iverson end up? First let me say it is wrong for Philly to trade him. Their winning percentage without AI is 33%, with him it's 56%. AI is not a great teammate they say, but he carries them to the NBA Finals by himself in 2001, and has single-handily kept them in playoff contention every year. Maybe the 76ers should of built their team with talent around AI. Instead their only big pick-up for AI was a beat-up, way past his prime, Chris Webber.
So what teams can end up with AI? Well he is a high paid guard so the Knicks are certainly interested. Of course for that to be done the Knicks would just trade every draft pick they get until the year 3010...
Seriously, Indiana looks to be the place AI is most likely to end up. Most likely the Pacers would give up Marquis Daniels, Jamal Tinsley and a couple of draft picks. If they were to do that, they would be able to give AI some real talent around him, making them the top team to beat in the East (also North Carolina would be the favorite in the East if they didn't play in the ACC).
In addition to the Pacers; the Lakers, Kings, Bulls, and Mavs have been said to have interest in AI. The Lakers are more than likely not to get him because they are a great team right now and would not trade Lamar Odom. The Kings also are not favorites because AI and Ron Artest just doesn't sound like a smart idea. The Bulls are a possibility. They would give up Ben Gordon and a draft pick for AI. This would be a win-win for both teams. Finally the Mavs are also in the hunt. They could give up some decent players because of the great depth they have. The think that would stop them from making the trade is the fact they are the favorites in many people's eyes to be in the NBA Finals. They don't want to make drastic moves.
Look for Iverson to be dealt to the Pacers sometime Saturday. They can not make the deal before Friday because Marquis Daniels was an off-season acquisition. Off-season acquisitions can not be traded until Dec. 15th.
